If you are getting input/output error on linux rendering .rhtml pages then the only way you can resolve it is by freezing the version of rails…just do:

rake rails:freeze:gems

This command will freeze this rails application to the version of Rails on the server. If you want to delve deep click the link : Freeze Rails

Future is bright Future is ETextEditor

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

No denying you will be absolutely gobsmacked by this text editor which is Windows equivalent of Mac’s text mate…and the features are sweet…so powerful. My earlier choice of text editor EditPlus2 just looks feeble to me now…

Some of its features are:
1) Select different words by pressing the Ctrl key down and then edit them simultaneously.

2) Complete auto completion facility for several programming languages like Rails and so on.

3) Execute Unix commands on the files in the context like doing a grep on the file to match certain expression.

and there are many more….so go on and unleash the power…here’s the website link to download. Watch the screencasts and check out some of its features.

My trivial mistake using MySql with Rails

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

Well as you know I did a fresh installation of ruby and rails on my system.

SO I created the database and tried retreving the records from it and for some reason it threw numerous “access denied” errors and it is then I realised that I need to download MySql adapter but still why will it give me “access denied” errors…beyond my intelligence.

For some reason I always thought mysql was part of the rails gems….but I was wrong.

I know it sounds so nooob…

Congestion charge

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

My ferret for articles related to recent congestion charge debate led me to few of these published back in 2003. These articles do not highlight the usual besetment; they rather ostentatiously describe “congestion charge” as the harbinger of good. I am not sure if the writers of these articles in the present day still maintain the same opinion or not (that will remain a mystery to us)

I know you do not believe me so here are the links: Article 1, Article 2, Article 3 and there are ad infinitum articles sharing the same notions.

So if the successful adoption and running of this system is setting an exemplary example then what is Londoners complaining about? Well the answer is simple and is evident from the questions and answers below:

1) When car prices go up do people stop buying cars? NO!!!

2) When alcohol becomes expensive do people stop drinking? NO!!!

3) When train fare is hiked do people stop travelling? NO!!!

So…I am not sure if the new congestion charge prices will for real stop people from commuting to work (in other words reduce the congestion) but it has certainly affronted the people.

Issues with webrick startup

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Issue - Everytime I created a project and tried to start the Webrick server I got an error message something like issue with the gem:main_object (seriously cannot remember). I did a bit of googling but could not get my hands on any useful resources.
Solution - Do a fresh installation of ruby and rails and the issue just disappears I am not exactly sure what was causing it but it was very frustrating….

Back on track

Yes…I am back working on 2 different projects in Ruby on Rails…cannot get enough of it now tbh. I am quite amazed by RESTful RAILS stuff…very interesting indeed.

Lame marketing

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Recently saw Vodafone’s poster ad which went like:

“Get a hug at work - Free Family minutes on vodafone”

Ok so a family gets free minutes to talk to each other but I was not very convinced by “Get a hug at work”.
I am not a Marketing guru but not sure what message were they trying to send out but it looks like some lazy man’s work… I am sure they can do better than that.

A simple thought

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

My first post was all about my tryst with wordpress and therefore to help my fellow wannabe wordpress users I left some userful comments on my blog and wordpress forum’s site (linking to my site). After about four months someone actually did find my solution useful and left positive comments for me.

Similarly, there are things we do in life which do not give us immediate benefits yet with time and patience we do reap the benefits…
